List of Private Chartered Universities in Uganda

Firstly, we need to understand what it means for a university to be chartered. A charter is a grant that a university meets the requirements and standards of academics set by the NCHE. Most notably, the grant is awarded by the President of the Republic of Uganda. In this article, we shall list all the Private Chartered Universities in Uganda.

First of all, there are over 60 universities in Uganda, both public and private. This is a report by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). Surprisingly, only eight universities are public and operated by the government. The rest are private, a military that is accredited to award degrees. In contrast, only 9 of the private universities in Uganda are chartered.

In addition, a university that is chartered means that it operates as a public university. Similarly, the chartered private university is in a position to lay out guidelines for:-

  • establishment,
  • control,
  • management and
  • administration of the University.

List of Private Chartered Universities in Uganda

  1. Islamic University in Mbale (Chartered).
  2. Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi (Chartered).
  3. Nkumba University, Entebbe (Chartered).
  4. Bugema Adventist University (Chartered).
  5. Uganda Christian University, Mukono (Chartered).
  6. Ndejje University, Luwero (Chartered).
  7. Kampala International University (Chartered).
  8. Mountains of the Moon University, Fort Portal. And finally,
  9. Kabale University, Kabale, Kikungiri.
